Adelin August Ryckenboer (1930-2016)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Adelin (Al) Ryckenboer on Wednesday February 24, 2016 at the age of 86. Al passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
Adelin will be remembered by Rita (née Couture), his wife of 60 years. He will be missed by his children; Roger (Lorna Lawson) Melissa & Kelly and his great-grand-daughter Aliyanna Ryckenboer-Hopfner from Saskatoon, Lynn (Ronn Laurier) Joel (Amanda) & Kyle (Joelle) and Carol (Paul Barsalou) Lydia, Avery & Delaney. He is also survived by his sister Yvette (Firmin Cocquyt), nephew Mark and niece Josiane (Dominique Dubbaut) and Jano from Belgium. As well as numerous cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. Adelin was predeceased by his parents, brother (Maurits) and his grandson Daniel Ryckenboer in 2007.
Al was born, February 21, 1930, to Micheal and Lavina (née Longueville) Ryckenboer in Maldegem, Belgium. Al grew up in Maldegem until the age of 18 (1948) when he immigrated to Canada to join his Aunt Helen and Uncle Victor Carbonneau in Lorette. Al spent his time in Mariapolis, Lorette and then Winnipeg where he worked a variety of jobs including selling newspapers, working as a butcher and finally settling on structural designer. In July 1952 he started work for Martin Paper, moving into a position of structural designer where for over 40 years he designed cardboard holders for a wide variety of objects including regular and four pack beverage cases, cookie boxes, furniture and garden seed display, for which he won an award in 1987.
Al loved music. Starting in 1950, Al played the trombone in the La Verendrye Band and then the Belgian Club Band. As any of the grandchildren would attest, the music was always on when Al was at home.
Al also enjoyed camping with his family at various locations throughout the United States and traveling back home to Belgium. He enjoyed weekends and summers camping, fishing and skiing at Falcon Lake, Nutimik and the Big Whiteshell. In 1983 Al and Rita purchased land, with their partners Doris and Paul Tetreault, starting a subdivision Lee River Falls in Lac Du Bonnet where he and Rita built their dream home. Al spent many years fishing, skiing, taking long slow pontoon boat rides and playing Belgium Bowling with his children, grandchildren and friends. For 25 years, Al and Rita hosted a Belgian Bowling Tournament on Canada Day long weekends.
Rita and Al were snowbirds, spending 3 months a year for almost 20 years in San Juan, Texas where they spent their time line dancing, shopping in Progresso, picking grapefruits off of their tree and enjoying “happy hour” with friends and visiting family.
We would like to extend our appreciation for the care he received while a resident at the Vista Park Lodge. In keeping with Al’s wishes, cremation has already taken place and arrangements are in the care of Desjardin Funeral Home. Please join us in celebrating his life Wednesday March 2, 2016 at 11am at the St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 820 Cottonwood Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba 10-120 Donald St. Wpg. Mb. R3C 9Z9
