BART HAK

Bart Hak was born on February 17, 1923 in Leusden, Netherlands (Holland) and passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 93.

Bart is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary, his children John (Frances), Peter (Dixie), Lidia, Martin (Gail), Albert, and Andrew (Lisa); grandchildren Nicholas (Kristie), Jessica, Brendon (Kira), Michelle (Dilver), Amanda, Benjamin, David, Christopher, Stephen, Jeffrey, Kelsey, Nathaniel and Meagen; sister Greet Bokkers; brother-in-laws Piet Van’t Klooster and Joop Vermoolen; sister-in-law Marie Hak and Riek Van Hofslot; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in the Netherlands. Bart was predeceased by his son William; grandsons Aaron and Matthew; parents Johannes and Aleida; his brothers Jan, Gareth, and Joop; his sisters Bertha, Marie, Greet, and Alie.

Bart was born on and raised on the family farm in Holland. At 31 years of age, he married his wife Mary, also from Holland, on February 24, 1954. Three weeks later, the newlyweds boarded a ship and immigrated to Canada in hopes of starting their own family farm. Together they faced many challenges in a new country including a new language. He worked for a market gardener in St. Germain for 10 years, all the while saving money to one day buy a farm. And they did all of this while raising a family of seven children. His dream came true in 1964 when they bought a dairy farm just outside of St. Pierre, Manitoba.

Farming was his lifelong passion, and his hard work and dedication was evidenced by many awards that he won with the family dairy business. While there was never a shortage of work to do, time was always found to attend church every Sunday morning followed by Sunday afternoon off. Free time was spent with family soccer or hockey games, time at the beach, a Sunday drive in the countryside, or with his other passion, horses.

Bart and Mary sold the farm in 1986 and retired to St. Vital where time was filled with curling, golfing, gardening, bowling, playing cards, and most importantly, their grandchildren! It was always a highlight for the grandkids to go over to Oma and Opa’s house. Bart and Mary could always be found at an event involving their grandchildren, from sports to arts, and church events to graduations.

A celebration of Bart’s life will be held at Mary Mother of the Church on 85 Kirkbridge Drive in Fort Richmond, Winnipeg on April 21, at 11:00 am.

Bart and Mary supported numerous charities. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

The family sincerely thanks the wonderful staff at the Victoria General Hospital for the care given to our Mom (Oma) and Dad (Opa).
