Ernie Harsant

With overwhelming sadness and heartache, we announce the passing of Ernie Harsant on September 6, 2016 at the age of 62.

He leaves to mourn in his passing, his wife of 40 years, Renée and the joy of his life, his son, Tyler (Edina). He also leaves his sister Sheila Lavallier (Gunter) of Kelwona, B.C., his sister, Mary Hill (Jack), his sister Carole Bardwell (Bill) and his brother Ted (Linda). Dear to his heart were also his nephews Jason Bardwell, Jonathan & Paul Buccini; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews and many friends and colleagues.

Upon graduating from the Respiratory Therapy program in 1984 he received the Fisher Scientific Award for Academic Excellence, the George Trudel Medical Company Award, the highest standing in Manitoba, and the Gold Medal for the highest standing in Canada on the Canadian Registry Exam.

Until his illness prevented him from doing so, he was employed at Seven Oaks General Hospital as a Respiratory Therapist for 26 years. He previously worked at the St. Boniface Hospital, Kelowna General Hospital and occasionally worked at the Grace Hospital, as well as with the Transport Team and Global Air, transporting patients worldwide. His work took him to China, Japan, Iceland, Turkey, Sweden, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Middle East and many other interesting destinations.

Ernie had an outstanding intellect and enjoyed thought-provoking discussions and debates with his son, wife, friends and colleagues on a continuous basis. He was a kind, caring and selfless individual who always put the welfare of others ahead of his own. He had a tremendous respect and love for animals and saved numerous stray cats while building structures for them to keep warm during the bitter winter months. Though no time was idle for Ernie, during his spare time he enjoyed listening to intellectual lectures, modifying computers and electronics, and was a self-taught electrician, plumber, carpenter, mechanic and handyman. No task or job was too great for him to undertake and he did so with much thought, planning, research and skill.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to D'Arcy's A.R.C., or Craig Street Cats. Service will be held at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons Street, on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. with Monseigneur Comeau officiating.
