FRANCIS DOYLE

FRANCIS PATRICK DOYLE After a long and rich life, Francis Patrick Doyle passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at the age of 93. Left to mourn are his devoted children, Rosemary (Gilbert) Morier, Patricia (Peter) Melvin, Elaine (George L.) Shaver and Paul (Judy) Doyle; his 10 grandchildren, Daniel (Josée), Philippe, Alexandre and Stéphanie Morier, Theresa (Tom) White and Gregory Melvin, Patrick Shaver, Stephen and Michael Doyle and Jennifer (Mustafa) Trann as well as six great-grandchildren and numerous other family members. Born in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba on February 28, 1922, Francis Doyle completed his early studies in Winnipeg before graduating cum laude from Laval University's Faculty of Medicine. He began his family practice in Ste-Anne-des-Chênes in 1948 and retired 50 years later, having dedicated countless hours throughout his career to helping others and improving the standards of medical care in the province. He was instrumental in the establishment of the first hospital in Ste-Anne and founded the Seine River Medical Centre which continues to serve the population of south eastern Manitoba today. Dr. Doyle was active in various organizations throughout his career: he was President of the Catholic Physicians Guild of Manitoba, Catholic Health Association of Canada, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, as well as Chair of the Board of Directors of St. Boniface General Hospital. He also helped to improve standards of education, particularly in the outlying areas of Manitoba. As Chair of the Seine River School Division and President of the Association des commissaires de langue française du Manitoba, he promoted the spread of bilingualism in the Division's schools. Dr. Doyle's interest in culture led to his appointment as a director of the CBC from 1977 and 1983. His long-standing service was recognized by his receipt of both the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba. In retirement Dr. Doyle wrote eight books including "A Doctor's Journey", which chronicled his life as a rural doctor, and "A Love Story", which described his extraordinary relationship with Marie-Thérèse, his wife of 51 years. To his many patients, hundreds of whom he brought into this world, Dr. Doyle was not only a compassionate healer but also a sensitive and caring listener, never stinting of his time and efforts to better the lives of those he touched. Pat Doyle was also a loving and proud father who always encouraged his children to seek the positive in life. His happiest times were spent with his family and he cherished holidays for the opportunities which they afforded to delight in travel and to share special moments together. Pat has now rejoined the love of his life, Marie-Thérèse, his lovely "bird of paradise". Prayers will be held on Wednesday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Boniface Cathedral, followed by the funeral mass on Thursday, December 10 at 11:00 a.m. in Ste-Anne's Roman Catholic Church. Dearest father, we love you and bid you adieu in the words of the immortal Bard, "Good night, sweet prince, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."
