MARY (MIES) HAK

Mary (Mies) Hak was born on April 26, 1926 in Soest, Netherlands (Holland) and passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 89.

Mary is survived by her children John (Frances), Peter (Dixie), Lidia, Martin (Gail), Albert, and Andrew (Lisa); grandchildren Nicholas (Kristie), Jessica, Brendon (Kira), Michelle (Dilver), Amanda, Benjamin, David, Christopher, Stephen, Jeffrey, Kelsey, Nathaniel and Meagen; brother-in-laws Joop Vermoolen and Piet Van’t Klooster; sister-in-laws Greet Bokkers and Marie Hak and Reik Van Hofslot; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives in the Netherlands. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Bart; her son William; grandsons Aaron and Matthew; parents Petrus and Martha; her brothers Wim, Jaap, and Arie; and her sisters Mien, Nel, Marie, Leny, and Coby.

Mary was born into a family of nine on the family farm in Holland. At 27 years of age, she married her husband Bart, also from Holland, on February 24, 1954. Three weeks later, the newlyweds boarded a ship and immigrated to Canada to start their new life together. Leaving Holland was a very tough decision as they did not know if they would ever see their families again.

Together they worked at a farm near Dauphin and for a market gardener in St. Germain and saved money towards the purchase of the family farm in 1964, just outside of St. Pierre, Manitoba. While Bart worked from sunrise to sunset, Mary did the same managing the household and looking after their seven children. Days were spent baking, cooking, house cleaning, sewing, and canning. Sundays were a day of rest for Mary and the family. She also loved having company over for coffee.

Once they retired to St. Vital, Mary enjoyed her free time playing cards with Bart and friends, knitting, crochet, bowling, curling, reading, and going for walks or bike rides. She also loved flowers, and could often be found reading in her ‘plant’ room.

Mary’s life focus was family, be it her own children, or later in life, her 15 grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was a very positive person who had a zest for life, along with a contagious laugh. Mary was the sweetest person you could ever come across.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at Mary Mother of the Church on 85 Kirkbridge Drive in Fort Richmond, Winnipeg on April 21, at 11:00 am.

Bart and Mary supported numerous charities. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.

The family sincerely thanks the wonderful staff at the Victoria General Hospital for the care given to our Mom (Oma) and Dad (Opa).
