The family of Mona Watkins is sad to announce her passing on Saturday, November 9, 2013, after a brief battle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bill, and her two sons Brian (Tanya) and Garth as well as three cherished granddaughters; Sara, Codie and Shayne. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Eleanor, Margie and Betty along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by special friends Joyce, Joan O., Marlyn and neighbours, the Benoits. She was predeceased by her parents, Fred & Gladys Hedley and her brother, Barry.

Mona was born on June 21, 1935 in Swan Lake, MB. After graduating from high school, she moved to Winnipeg to attend nursing school at the original Grace Hospital. She received her RN degree in 1956.

She worked her entire career at the Grace Hospitals, where she made many friends. In June 1959 she married Bill and settled in the Windsor Park area where they still resided. Mona was a huge sports fan and spent the summers watching the boys play baseball, and the winters at indoor and outdoor rinks, watching them play hockey. She enjoyed curling with the St. Vital Curlettes and golfing at Crescent Drive with her friends.

One of her greatest joys though, was being a grandma. She was so proud of all three of her granddaughters and tried to attend all of their activities. She could always be counted on to care for them when they were sick, and she nursed them back to health with her fresh baked chocolate chip cookies and angel food cake. She will forever have a special place in the heart of her “sweetie hearties”.

A sincere thanks to the Oncology department at the Victoria Hospital for their professionalism, as well as to the doctors, nurses, med students, and all the staff for their care and compassion on 4South.

A funeral service will be held at St. Bartholomew Anglican Church at 881 Autumnwood Drive on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 2:00 pm. As per Mona’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private internment the morning before the service.

At Mona’s request, the following is dedicated to Sara, Codie and Shayne,

May you always have an angel by your side. Watching out for you in all the things you do. Reminding you to keep believing in brighter days. Finding ways for your wishes and dreams to take you to beautiful places. Giving you hope that is as certain as the sun. Giving you the strength of serenity as your guide. May you always have love and comfort and courage. And may you always have an angel by your side.

May you always have an angel by your side. Someone there to catch you if you fall. Encouraging your dreams. Inspiring your happiness. Holding your hand and helping you through it all.

In all of our days our lives are always changing. Tears come along as well as smiles. Along the roads you travel, may the miles be a thousand times more lovely than lonely. May they give you gifts that never, ever end: someone wonderful to love and a dear friend in whom you can confide. May you have rainbows after every storm. May you have hopes to keep you warm.

And may you always have an angel by your side. (Emilia Larson)
